Washington, D.C.—Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano today announced the elimination of the paper arrival/departure form (Form I-94W) for authorized travelers from nations participating in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP)—streamlining secure travel for millions of visitors to the United States every year by consolidating the collection of traveler information and enhancing security by automatically providing DHS with important passenger information prior to departure.

"The Visa Waiver Program facilitates secure and hassle-free travel for citizens of participating countries—making international travel safer and easier," said Secretary Napolitano. "This step to eliminate the paper I-94W leverages the latest technology to further bolster security, increase convenience for visitors and better protect privacy."

Following a successful seven-month pilot program conducted with the support of the Government of New Zealand on Air New Zealand flights from Auckland to Los Angeles International Airport, the use of paper I-94W forms will be eliminated for VWP travelers with an approved Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) arriving in the United States at all airports by the end of this summer. CBP will activate automated processing for U.S. airports on a rolling basis over the next several months.

Under the Implementing Recommendations of the 9/11 Commission Act of 2007, applying for an ESTA became mandatory on January 12, 2009, for all nationals of VWP countries prior to boarding a carrier to travel by air or sea to the United States. This requirement does not affect U.S. citizens returning from overseas or citizens of VWP countries traveling on a valid U.S. visa, and allows DHS to determine whether a VWP traveler presents a threat long before the individual boards a U.S.-bound aircraft.

The elimination of the paper I-94W form enables travelers to provide basic biographical, travel and eligibility information automatically through ESTA prior to departure for the United States —reducing redundancy and enhancing the security of sensitive personal information, as CBP stores and protects all VWP data electronically on secure servers.

CBP recommends that travelers submit ESTA applications as soon as an applicant begins making travel plans. ESTA applications may be submitted at any time prior to travel, and once approved, will be valid for two years or until the applicant’s passport expires. To date, CBP has received more than 19 million ESTA applications from citizens of VWP countries—applications that will now automatically cover I-94W submission.

VWP—established as a pilot program in 1986 to help facilitate travel and made permanent in 2000—currently enables the nationals of 36 participating countries to travel to the United States for up to 90 days without obtaining a visa.

That is when they will probably start charging for this, when there is no longer green forms to fill in.
Hope the charge is not to high.

Something else for the poor long suffering tourist to pay for. I think they should think twice about charging - but guess we are not too popular following the BP problem! :<wink

Can't think of too many countries which think it is a good idea to charge the very people you want to come and visit to pay for the advertising to entice you to visit! On its own it might be not that much but when you add it to the rest of the taxes total some people are going to say enough is enough.

The BBC website has a story running today that a fee for completing an ESTA will commence on the 9th of September.

The fee will be $14 (£9).:(

Would updating the form give it another two years or is it better to totally start again?
If we start again does that mean we will be in the system twice? I am such a worry head i will panic in case it confusses the system.<:embarr

I know it is not a lot of money but i do think i spend enough in the USA to help their economy as it is :)

The actual date is the 8th September, apparently.

Mary you can just do a new ESTA application and that will then last 2 years. We are going to do that at the end of August before our trip. People lose their numbers all the time so hopefully it shouldn't cause a problem.

I think it IS a lot of money, bearing in mind the high price of flights to Orlando - my son was able to fly to Borneo for a fraction of a high season flight to MCO, and a family of 7 or 8 will be paying another £70 or so. How that can help encourage people to fly to America I really do not know!

I am going to warn my guests to get on and do their applications - by the way, they don't have to have your villa address etc to complete this of course and I don't give out our address until after the balance has been paid.

For those that say it is just £9 they are missing the point it is just one more tax on top of a lot of others which mounts up and adds to the cost of getting there before you spend a penny on enjoying yourself.

Bet when you get to America you will still get the same 'friendly' immigration officer and the same queues at Orlando airport!

Sorry if i worded my message wrong it is a lot of money i think, i just didn't want to sound like a penny pincher <:embarr
As i say as tourists they get more than enough out of us now and i do agree it is something else adding to the pot.
I feel really chuffed that all my guests booked for next year i have sent an email telling them to fill out the forms now. Two have replied and i have saved them £240 between them. <:cheer

That's fantastic, Mary. I am sure your guests are really pleased. I doubt that many tour ops would be 'wasting' their time emailing guests to save them money. That of course is one of the great benefits of booking directly with an owner.<:cheer

JAF, let's hope that some of this money is spent on training immigration officers to be a little more welcoming to us Brits when we land in Orlando ready to spend more money to boost their economy!:<wink I know they have a very important job to do, and I know they are the front line of defence, so to speak, but they could still do their job efficiently whilst welcoming those people who are ultimately helping to pay their wages and keep them in a job.
